EV Charger Installation in Tarneit: Five Things to Settle First

Facts checked 2026-10-18

Tarneit is a young suburb. At the 2021 Census it had 56,370 people with a median age of 30, and 56.9% of homes had a mortgage. If you've just bought a home and an electric car, here are five things worth settling before a charger is installed.

1. Know where rebates stand

Don't budget on a rebate. Solar Victoria's zero emissions vehicle facts page says the ZEV Subsidy application deadline was 6pm on 30 June 2023, and the Green Vehicle Guide says Victoria's EV registration discount ended on 1 January 2026. On the pages we read on 18 October 2026, there's no current Victorian rebate for an EV purchase or a home charger.

2. Check what the public alternatives cost

Wyndham City lists two council chargers in Tarneit. One is 50kW at 60 cents per kWh and the other is 22kW at 30 cents per kWh (details in the FAQs below). The 50kW site charges twice the per-kWh rate of the 22kW one. How either compares with your own electricity rate is in our post on home charging versus Wyndham's council chargers.

3. Look at your supply, not just the wall

89.5% of Tarneit's 17,274 dwellings are separate houses, so finding a spot for the charger is rarely the hard part. What the switchboard and supply can carry is. Powercor's planning report names Tarneit in the descriptions of its Werribee, Laverton and Melton zone substations, and says a future Rockbank East substation will support the area as well. It also says rising EV numbers are increasingly causing charging demand that could affect its maximum demand. For your own home, an EV ready assessment is how you find out where you stand, and our switchboard upgrade page covers what follows if the board needs work.

4. Hire a registered electrical contractor

Energy Safe Victoria's rule is plain: for electrical installation work, you must engage a registered electrical contractor. Ask to see the licence before you accept a quote.

5. Keep the certificate

When the work is done, the electrician must complete a Certificate of Electrical Safety and give you a copy. Prescribed work needs independent inspection, with your copy due within 4 days of the certificate being completed. Other work gets a copy within 30 days. Ask which one applies to your job, and read ESV's guide to certificates.

EV charger installation in Tarneit: Questions

Is there a Victorian rebate for a home EV charger?

Not on the sources we checked on 18 October 2026. Solar Victoria's ZEV subsidy closed to applications at 6pm on 30 June 2023, and its home page lists solar panel, hot water and apartment rebates but nothing for EV chargers. We won't promise you a rebate, so check Solar Victoria before you buy.

Where are the council chargers in Tarneit?

Wyndham City lists two. The Bembit Bag-rook Community Centre at 61 Polly Parade has a 50kW charger at 60 cents per kWh, with 3 hours free parking. The Dianella Community Centre at 6 Congo Drive has a 22kW charger at 30 cents per kWh, with a 2 hour maximum.

Can I have a 22kW charger at home?

Powercor says a 22kW home charger needs three-phase power and isn't suitable for all customers. A 7kW wall charger runs on single-phase. Your switchboard and supply decide which is possible.

What paperwork should I get after the install?

A Certificate of Electrical Safety. Energy Safe Victoria says electricians must complete one and give the customer a copy. Keep it with your house records.
