Is it cheaper to charge at home or at a council charger? For drivers in Wyndham, both prices are published, so you can compare them per kilowatt hour (kWh). Everything below was read on 18 October 2026, and rates can change, so check the sources before you decide.
What Wyndham City charges
Wyndham City says its adopted fee structure is 30 cents per kWh for chargers up to 22kW and 60 cents per kWh for 50kW chargers and faster. Its EV charger page lists the sites:
| Site | Suburb | Rating | Rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wunggurrwil Dhurrung Community Centre | Wyndham Vale | 22kW | 30c |
| Hunter Werribee Public Carpark | Werribee | 22kW | 30c |
| Dianella Community Centre | Tarneit | 22kW | 30c |
| Jamieson Way Community Centre | Point Cook | 22kW | 30c |
| Bembit Bag-rook Community Centre | Tarneit | 50kW | 60c |
| Wyndham Civic Centre | Werribee | 50kW | 60c |
| Truganina Community Centre | Truganina | 60kW | 60c |
| Lollypop Creek Community Centre | Werribee | 60kW | 60c |
| Alcock Rd Reserve Pavilion | Truganina | 80kW | 60c |
| Koomail Tardy Community Centre | Truganina | 80kW | 60c |
There's also an idle fee: $1 a minute starting 15 minutes after your charge ends, capped at $204, from 1 July 2026.
What the default home rates are
The Essential Services Commission sets the Victorian Default Offer (VDO) each year. It's a regulated benchmark, not what every household pays. For 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027, GST inclusive, the usage rates for the Powercor and Jemena zones are:
| Tariff | Powercor zone | Jemena zone |
|---|---|---|
| Flat | 28.22c | 27.47c |
| Time of use, peak | 41.67c | not listed here |
| Time of use, off-peak | 22.49c | 21.76c |
| Time of use, solar soak | 17.26c | 17.65c |
The VDO 2026-27 determination has the full schedules. The Powercor zone also carries a daily supply charge of $1.3805, which you pay whether or not you own an EV, so it isn't counted here.
The gap, in cents per kWh
Using the Powercor zone figures, here's how much more the council charger costs per kWh than each home rate:
| Home rate | vs council 30c | vs council 60c |
|---|---|---|
| Flat, 28.22c | 1.78c more | 31.78c more |
| Off-peak, 22.49c | 7.51c more | 37.51c more |
| Solar soak, 17.26c | 12.74c more | 42.74c more |
On default rates, the 22kW council chargers are close to a flat home tariff, and the 50kW-and-faster chargers cost more than double. That is a price per kWh. It isn't a price per kilometre, and we haven't tried to work one out because it depends on your car.
Check your own bill
Plenty of households are on retail offers above or below the VDO, and we can't tell from here which zone your address is in. Your bill shows your rates and your distributor. If you're on a time-of-use plan, check when the off-peak and solar soak periods apply to you, because they only help if the charger runs inside them.
What this means for a wall charger
If you charge mostly at home, your electricity plan sets the price. If you rely on public chargers, Wyndham's fast sites cost more per kWh. Either way, a home charger gives you the choice. For planning one, see Werribee and Tarneit, our EV charger installation page, or our guide to charging from solar. You can also call 1300 797 267.
